SECTION: BIOLOGY
MODULE: 20
Part A: Units
Support and movement in plants and animals
a. Necessity for support and movement in plants and animals
b. Arrangement and role of supporting tissues in young and old plants
c. Types and functions of the exo and endo skeletons
d. Locomotion in a finned fish
e. Identification of the bones of axial and appendicular skeletons
f. Types and functions of movable joints (ball and socket, hinge joint)
g. Structure, function and location of cardiac muscle
h. Smooth and skeletal muscles
i. Roles of muscles in movement of the arm in humans
Part B: Project
Study support tissues and movement systems in plants and animals.
Project Title: Support and Movement Systems
Objective: Identify structures that enable support and movement.
Project Instructions:
- 1. Compare support tissues in young and old plants.
- 2. Draw and label an exoskeleton and endoskeleton example.
- 3. Identify axial and appendicular bones in a simple diagram.
- 4. Describe how a hinge joint and ball-and-socket joint move.
- 5. Explain the role of muscles in moving the human arm.
- 6. Consult your coach where necessary.
Evidence to Submit:
- • Labeled diagrams and notes.
- • Joint movement explanations.
- • Muscle function summary.
Submission
Part C: Training Others
Teach a peer about skeletons, joints, and muscles.
Guidance:
- • Explain differences between exo and endo skeletons.
- • Demonstrate joint types with examples.
- • Discuss muscle types and their roles.
Reflection:
- • What did the learner understand well?
- • Which part needed more practice?
- • What support do you need from your coach?
Submission
Part D: Assessment
Competency Levels:
1 = Expectations not met
2 = Partially met
3 = Satisfactorily met
4 = Excellently met
