SECTION: BIOLOGY
MODULE: 3
Part A: Units
1. Cell physiology
a. Meaning of cell physiology
b. Cell membrane structure and properties
c. Diffusion
d. Osmosis
e. Active transport
f. Factors affecting diffusion, osmosis and transport
g. Water relations in cells — turgor, plasmolysis, wilting, haemolysis
Part B: Project
Observe diffusion and osmosis using simple materials.
Project Title: Cell Transport Observation
Objective: Demonstrate diffusion and osmosis and relate observations to cell physiology.
Project Instructions:
- 1. Set up a diffusion activity (food coloring in water) and record observations.
- 2. Set up an osmosis activity (potato slices in salt and fresh water).
- 3. Compare results and explain water movement in each case.
- 4. Relate findings to turgor or plasmolysis.
- 5. Consult your coach where necessary.
Evidence to Submit:
- • Observation notes for diffusion and osmosis.
- • Comparison of results.
- • Short explanation linking to cell physiology.
Submission
Part C: Training Others
Teach a peer about diffusion and osmosis.
Guidance:
- • Explain diffusion and osmosis using simple examples.
- • Demonstrate one activity and discuss results.
- • Ask the learner to interpret water movement.
Reflection:
- • What did the learner understand well?
- • What needed more explanation?
- • What support do you need from your coach?
Submission
Part D: Assessment
Competency Levels:
1 = Expectations not met
2 = Partially met
3 = Satisfactorily met
4 = Excellently met
Self-assessment:
- • Cell membrane and transport:
- • Diffusion and osmosis:
- • Active transport and factors:
- • Water relations in cells:
Coach assessment:
