Part A: Units

Reading

a. Reading skills: note taking, study reading, critical reading, interpretive reading, responsive reading, recognizing attitude and tone, distinguishing facts from opinions

b. Intensive reading: study of novels, plays and poems, focus on critical analysis of three prescribed texts, focus on oral literature

c. Extensive reading: literary and non literary materials on contemporary issues, biographies, novels, plays, poems, short stories, reports

d. Comprehension skills: recall, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation, summary and note taking

Part B: Project

Build a reading portfolio that shows analysis and comprehension.

Project Title: Reading Skills Portfolio

Objective: Strengthen critical reading, comprehension, and summary skills.

Project Instructions:

  1. 1. Read one literary text and one non-literary text.
  2. 2. Identify tone, attitude, and main ideas in each text.
  3. 3. Distinguish facts from opinions with examples.
  4. 4. Write a summary and notes for each text.
  5. 5. Include a short reflection on reading strategies used.
  6. 6. Consult your coach where necessary.

Evidence to Submit:

  • • Notes and summaries.
  • • Analysis of tone and attitude.
  • • Fact vs opinion examples.

Part C: Training Others

Coach a peer on reading and comprehension techniques.

Guidance:

  • • Demonstrate how to take notes while reading.
  • • Explain how to identify tone and attitude.
  • • Practice summarizing a short passage.

Reflection:

  • • What did the learner understand well?
  • • Which skill needed more practice?
  • • What support do you need from your coach?

Part D: Assessment

Competency Levels:

1 = Expectations not met

2 = Partially met

3 = Satisfactorily met

4 = Excellently met

Coach assessment: Learner completes the self-assessment using the 1-4 scale. The coach prepares a short quiz or conversation (outside the system if needed) and assigns the coach score.
