SECTION: CHEMISTRY

MODULE: 1

Part A: Units

1. Introduction to chemistry;

   a. Recall primary chemistry topics

   b. Definition of chemistry

   c. Uses of apparatus

   d. Bunsen burner

   e. Laboratory safety

2. Simple classification of substances;

   a. Separation of mixtures

Part B: Project

Create a simple experiment or observation activity.

Project Title: Separation of Mixtures in Everyday Life

Objective: Apply basic chemistry concepts through a simple separation activity and safety awareness.

Project Instructions:

  1. 1. Choose a simple mixture found at home or school (e.g., sand and salt, soil and water, tea leaves and water).
  2. 2. Identify the apparatus needed for separation (sieve, filter paper, container, heat source if safe).
  3. 3. Describe the separation method you will use (filtration, decantation, evaporation, or sieving).
  4. 4. Carry out the separation safely and record each step.
  5. 5. Explain why the method works and what you observed.
  6. 6. Consult your coach where necessary.

Evidence to Submit:

  • • List of apparatus used and their purpose.
  • • Step-by-step notes on the separation process.
  • • Final observation results.

Submission

Accepted: PDF, JPG, PNG, DOC, DOCX (max 8MB).

Part C: Training Others

Learner explains lab safety or basic chemistry.

Guidance:

  • • Explain key lab safety rules and the purpose of protective gear.
  • • Demonstrate correct use of one apparatus.
  • • Show a simple separation method and explain the steps.

Activities:

  1. 1. Safety briefing: list three key lab rules.
  2. 2. Apparatus demonstration: explain use and care.
  3. 3. Guided separation: walk the learner through a simple mixture separation.

Reflection:

  • • What did the learner understand well?
  • • Where did they struggle?
  • • What support do you need from your coach?

Submission

Accepted: PDF, JPG, PNG, DOC, DOCX (max 8MB).

Part D: Assessment

Competency Levels:

1 = Not met

2 = Partial

3 = Satisfactory

4 = Excellent

Coach assessment: Learner completes the self-assessment using the 1-4 scale. The coach prepares a short quiz or conversation (outside the system if needed) and assigns the coach score.

Self-assessment:

  • • Understanding of chemistry definition and topics:
  • • Knowledge of apparatus and their uses:
  • • Lab safety awareness:
  • • Ability to separate mixtures:
