Part A: Units

Listening and speaking;

a. Pronunciation; English sounds, distinction between English sounds and mother tongue and Kiswahili, identification and mastery of problematic sounds

b. Oral narratives; ogre, trickster stories and riddles

c. Mastery of content; debate

d. Etiquette; use of courteous language

e. Non-verbal cues that enhance listening and speaking

Part B: Project

Write a practical project that applies the above lessons in a real-life communication setting.

Project Title: Community Communication Practice

Objective: Apply listening and speaking skills in a real-life communication setting while improving pronunciation, confidence, and clarity.

Project Instructions:

  1. 1. Choose a real-life setting (school, work, family, or community meeting).
  2. 2. Prepare a short oral narrative (ogre, trickster story, or riddle) and practice pronunciation of difficult sounds.
  3. 3. Hold a short discussion or debate on a relevant topic for your chosen setting.
  4. 4. Use courteous language and appropriate non-verbal cues (eye contact, posture, gestures) throughout.
  5. 5. Ask at least one listener to give feedback on clarity and confidence.
  6. 6. Review your performance and consult your coach where necessary.

Activities to Include:

  • • Storytelling session with at least one listener.
  • • A 5-10 minute discussion or debate with 1-3 participants.
  • • Pronunciation practice for at least five problematic sounds.

Evidence to Submit:

  • • Short notes on the setting and participants.
  • • Key points from the discussion or debate.
  • • Feedback received from listeners.

Part C: Training Others

Create a structured section where the learner practices teaching or guiding another learner in speaking and listening skills.

Guidance:

  • • Choose a learner or peer to guide.
  • • Demonstrate correct pronunciation of selected sounds.
  • • Lead them through a short oral narrative or riddle.
  • • Facilitate a brief discussion or debate topic.

Activities:

  1. 1. Pronunciation drill: model sounds and correct errors.
  2. 2. Storytelling practice: guide the learner to narrate clearly.
  3. 3. Discussion practice: prompt responses and active listening.

Reflection:

  • • What went well in your guidance?
  • • Where did the learner struggle?
  • • What support do you need to improve your coaching?

Part D: Assessment

Competency Level:

1 = Expectations not met

2 = Partially met

3 = Satisfactorily met

4 = Excellently met

Coach assessment: Learner completes the self-assessment using the 1-4 scale. The coach prepares a short quiz or conversation (outside the system if needed) and assigns the coach score.

How communication skills are evaluated:

Clarity of speech, confidence in delivery, correctness of pronunciation and language use, courteous language, and effective non-verbal cues.
